What Is Running To Lose Weight?
You've probably heard people talking about running to lose weight. Although you believe you're alone in it. It's still one of the most read articles and almost every other day I get emails about it from readers. Even top professional runners need to be aware of it, and running to lose weight isn't even as simple as you'd think if they're training 90+ hours a week!
I've been running for a few years now, mainly cross country, so I'm quite familiar with some of what people recommend to help with weight loss. But that doesn't mean that running to lose weight is for me. I think there are good reasons for both runners and overweight people to use this method, and they've all worked for me. But that doesn't mean it's right for everyone.
The first thing you need to consider is whether or not you have a cardio-vascular problem that's causing you to gain weight. If you have a lot of health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure, you should really pay attention to lowering those numbers before you start running. Otherwise running can actually make them worse. I do recommend starting an exercise program if you have one of these problems anyway, but even so, I think running to lose weight through intensity is a much healthier solution.
Many people don't realize that losing weight also burns fat. But even more important, it gains weight! This is called muscle weight. Your body uses muscle when it needs energy to run, walk, climb, swim, etc. It also stores fat as muscle, so you'll be keeping more muscle mass even when you're losing weight.
This may sound counterintuitive, but if you lift weights and run, you will both build muscle and burn fat. If you don't know how this works, it's simple: As long as you lift weights and run, your body will burn fat for energy. It doesn't matter whether or not you lift weights. Even if you rarely do any sort of lifting in the rest of your life, you can still benefit from doing so. This applies whether you're a man or a woman. You won't gain any weight at the gym or at home, while doing nothing but walking and running.
This point may seem obvious, but many people believe that running is just a good way to stay in shape. The truth is that it's a great way to burn calories and lose weight at the same time. And it's a good way to lose weight, period. If you combine running with other activities like dancing, playing tennis, playing soccer, participating in a group fitness class, or going for a walk, then you'll be able to get the maximum benefit from running. But you can also combine it with other forms of exercise, such as swimming, hiking, aerobics, or calisthenics.
Many runners are advocates of a balanced diet. While you definitely need to eat some carbs and protein each day, your diet should be largely comprised of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and drinking lots of water. If you eat too much junk food or fatty foods, you'll be setting yourself up for a lot of extra calories that you'll have no use for. This is why dieters are advised to eat healthy every three or four days and to eat more frequently throughout the day - because it's a good way to lose both weight and fat, while eating fewer calories overall.
Running can be a very effective way to both lose weight and to strengthen muscles. It's easy to do, requires little equipment, and is an extremely fun activity. What's more is that you can do it nearly anywhere, in any weather. So you're not limited by location, which makes running even more versatile than many people tend to think.
